Last week we took a look at susceptibility. Why there is no Bogeyman – with your name written on them (!) – out there waiting for you. If you need a quick reminder, you can find the post here

As so often is the case, this has led on to various conversations with Clients, friends and family about what actually determines susceptibility. In other words, risk factors. The things most likely to tip the odds for you in the wrong direction.

Before we go any further, there’s one very important thing to bear in mind. That we’re all completely unique. In every way. There’s never been another person exactly like us and never will be again. So, however similar we may be to another person – or people, particularly our relatives – our own particular make up, circumstances, life and medical history are unique to us. 100%.
With September here and the schools back – where did the Summer go?!? – stories have already started to appear about the forthcoming Flu / winter bugs season.

How new strains are appearing in Europe / the Far East / Australia / fill in the blank. That they’re all heading straight for the UK. And it’s going to be the worst season ever. Guaranteed.

The picture painted is of battalions of bugs rampaging their way round the world, sinister figures with evil intent bent on worldwide domination. Bogeymen for adults. It’s enough to make you want to retreat to the safety of your bed, pull the duvet over your head and stay there until it’s all over.
This is one of those questions we love to ask people to help get them thinking about what they truly value in life. So, before we go any further, why not take a moment to answer it for yourself?

And, for those of you who worry about getting the answer “wrong”, the good news is there isn’t a “right” answer. Phew, that takes the pressure off! It’s only about what matters to you and, you never know, you may learn something interesting about yourself in the process...
A couple of weeks ago we talked about one of the many ironies of modern life. How so many things designed to make our lives simpler seem to have exactly the opposite effect. And top of this list for many people is the modern obsession with communication. OF EVERYTHING. RIGHT NOW THIS SECOND. You can find the post here

Which neatly brings us on to Social Media and how often it finds itself in the spotlight – and, all too often, for the wrong reasons. While concern has tended to focus on its effect on children and teenagers, it’s become clear that adults are far from immune from its charms and, in many cases, are just as bad…

It’s a subject we talk to Clients about regularly, whether their own love affair with it or someone else’s (!). The impact it has on their lives, its addictive nature.
It’s ironic that so many things in modern life, designed to make our lives simpler, seem to have exactly the opposite effect. And top of the list for many people is the modern obsession with communication. OF EVERYTHING. RIGHT NOW THIS SECOND.

The internet, allowing instantaneous access to information on any topic. E mails instead of letters written on paper, with real ink and delivered by real people. Mobile phones long since used simply for talking to people. Facebook, X / Twitter and the like; calling for continuous updates and instant opinions on any topic under the sun.
Like us, you’ve probably been amazed – and amused (!) – by just how creative people can be with their reasons for doing something. Ironically, it’s often something they admit they’d be better off not doing in the first place…

Or, perhaps, it’s for not doing something. And, again, a large dose of irony is often involved; as this usually comes straight after them saying it’s something they really want to do.

Talk about sending out mixed messages, both to ourselves and the world around us.
A couple of weeks ago we looked at some of the words we use every day, probably many times each day. Ones we don’t think twice about using. Hope. Believe. You can find it here

They’re both words where we think we’re saying one thing, but the meaning – and intention underpinning them – is very different. It means we’re sending out mixed messages – both to ourselves and those around us – without ever realising it. Even worse, they’re words we use many times a day, usually without giving them a second thought.
When we talk to Clients, it’s always interesting the words they use and, just as important, the meaning and energy – or intent – behind them. And, if that sounds like a strange thing to say, please bear with us. It’ll make sense in a minute. Yes, it will!

For many of us, it’s been a long time since we were at School and Primary School at that. When we were encouraged – or made (!) – to look up words in a dictionary. Find out what they actually meant and, just as important, how to spell them. It was much easier to just use the words everyone around us was using, without ever stopping to ask what they actually meant and whether this reflected what we wanted to say.
If this sounds like a rather odd question, it isn’t meant to be. Nor is there a “right” answer. Phew, that takes the pressure off (!). As always, all we want to do is get you thinking…

If you still suspect it may be a trick question, let’s put it a different way.

Have you noticed how the modern world focuses on stuff?
Even though these words of wisdom may date back over a hundred years, they’re as true today as when first spoken. They’re usually attributed to the great Poet, Playwright and Raconteur, Oscar Wilde; although it’s been suggested he may have “borrowed” them from elsewhere. We’ll probably never know the truth and leave it to those of a more literary persuasion to debate…

Anyway, before we digress too much further (!), let’s return to the present day and one of those things that seems so hard to do. To be yourself.
