With it being the middle of the holiday season – hurrah (!) – we’re going to keep this week’s post short and sweet.

Whether you’re currently on holiday, about to go or just back why not STOP for a moment.

Take a deep breath – or two (!) – and notice how you’re feeling right now.

Then take another deep breath – or two (!) – and let any cares or worries you have drift away.

Notice how you’re sitting or standing. Whether you’re tense or relaxed.

Carrying the world on your shoulders or, perhaps, have them up round your ears (!). Then just let your body relax.

And now you’re feeling more relaxed, take couple of minutes – or more (!) – to really notice your surroundings. What’s going on around you. BUT – and it’s a big but – just look. Turn off – or mute (!) – the Little Monster in your head. This isn’t the time for a running commentary or the usual snap judgments on whatever is going on around you.

Focus on how things look and feel. The way the light catches a person’s hair, a puddle of water or the window pane. The sounds of what’s going on around you. From people, animals, the sea or breeze rustling the leaves in a tree. Or, perhaps, the traffic in the distance. The smell of freshly mown grass or a cup of coffee. Notice all the little things happening around you in your little corner of the world. A shot from your own life’s movie.

And, as you do so, you’ll notice how much lighter you feel. How quiet your mind has become, as you’re free from the Little Monster in your head.

You feel very calm and grounded. All those little things - the ones you normally would have missed - seem very poignant. Time stands still while life goes on around you.

Then, when you’re ready, take another couple of deep breaths before re-joining the flow of life.

It’s so easy to get caught up in our own lives that we miss what’s going on around us, as well as losing that all important perspective in the process. Taking a few minutes every day to “just be” is like having a mini holiday. Even better, it’s quick and easy to do, fits into even the busiest day and doesn’t require months of planning and agonising…

As always, the choice is yours.
