With “that” time of year rapidly approaching, we smiled to ourselves at a challenge posed by one of the blogs we subscribe to. On one hand it sounds deceptively simple. Not doing something we all say we don’t want to do AND only for 30 days.

With most challenges involving doing something we HAVE to do every day, it makes a very refreshing change.

It’s something we all do at one time or another. And, in some cases, much, much more often (!).
We all try to do the “right” thing, whatever that may be. Whether in our own lives or affecting the wider world. And, let’s be honest, sometimes we wonder why on earth we bother – or whether it’s really making any difference.

Having had this conversation several times recently with both Clients and friends – which is always a hint it would make a good topic for a blog post (!) – here’s a great little story to remind you that it’s ALWAYS worthwhile.

If you’re sitting comfortably, then here we go.
We all have them from time to time, those days where things don’t seem to flow as smoothly as we’d like. Or, perhaps, don’t seem to flow at all (!). When everything is so much more of an effort than usual…

As with everything in life, there are many different reasons why this may be the case.
Like us, you may not have come across this word before. Tolerations.

And, if we’re completely honest, we weren’t 100% sure it was a “proper” word, so ended up checking it in an online dictionary. Much to our surprise, it was there, although the first definition we came across wasn’t particularly helpful:

“The practice of tolerating something, in particular, differences of opinion or behaviour.”

Mmm…
If you’ve flown off to sunnier climes this year – hurrah (!) – you’ll have heard these words of wisdom during the pre flight safety briefing. That is, if you were listening...

“In the event of an emergency put your oxygen mask on FIRST, THEN help others.” Perhaps you’ve even wondered why they keep saying something that seems so blindingly obvious.

Well, the answer is quite simple.
Goodness, mid September already, it must be time for our usual pre Winter post about the forthcoming “Colds and Flu” season. And, with the mainstream media already busy talking about the “next pandemic” and how steps are already being taken to avoid it, this year we’re going to focus on applying a little commonsense to the issue.

Let’s start with the very obvious. Well, to us, if not to everyone else (!).

THERE IS NO BOGEYMAN OUT THERE WAITING TO POUNCE ON THE FIRST UNSUSPECTING PERSON PASSING BY. In other words, you!

And, if you’re wondering why we’ve put it in emboldened block capitals, it’s to get your attention to this very simple fact – and one the mainstream media continues to completely ignore.
A couple of days earlier than usual – just to confuse everyone (!) – a quick post to say that we’re going to take a short break from our weekly blog posts, back as usual on Wednesday 20th September.

However, with over 450 posts on our blog page, there’s still plenty to choose from in the meantime!
We’ve talked before about how focussing on what you don’t want – or desire (!) – isn’t the same as focussing on what you do. And, yes, we know this goes completely against prevailing logic.

While they may look like two sides of the same coin, they’re VERY DIFFERENT, for one simple reason. One which seems to evade most people. Focussing on what you DON’T WANT is still putting all the energy and emphasis on the unwanted outcome. It’s NOT putting it into the one you’d like.
We love dispelling those “truths” – probably better described as “myths” – which so many people seem to automatically accept as true, without having first given them any conscious thought. Well, if we’re completely honest, any thought at all.

They then use their supposed failure to live up to this particular “truth” – whatever it may be – as a reason to beat themselves up. Or, more accurately, the Little Monster in their Heads uses it as a reason to beat them up. Cue a very rapid and negative downward spiral...

So, what’s the “truth” we’re going to put under the spotlight this week?
Clients often ask us why they don’t seem to be getting the results they desire, particularly where they’ve been putting a lot of time and energy into personal development and it doesn’t seem to be bearing fruit. While it’s very simple in theory – just keep your focus on the direction you wish to go and what you desire – as so often is the case, there are many different variables to take into account.
