Perhaps you’ve heard this rather old fashioned saying before, whether the sewing metaphor resonates with you or not (!).

If it doesn’t – and you’d prefer a more up to date version – here goes. Pro active beats reactive every time.

Usually trotted out in connection with problems, the logic behind it is quite simple and self explanatory. The sooner you deal with a potential problem, the better, as it’s likely to be simpler, easier and quicker to deal with. It not, you run the risk of it becoming bigger or more difficult to resolve. Dare we say it, basic common sense really…

However, this logic can be applied far more widely, perhaps even used as a little mantra. That it’s better to deal with anything BEFORE it starts to build up momentum and gain a life of its own. Proactive beats reactive every time.

And, just as it applies to anything that could come under the “problem” heading, it also applies to all those other things we talk about regularly in this blog, not to mention everything else in life (!). Here are a few simple examples:

Hydration, as in drinking water regularly during the day, rather than waiting until you feel thirsty. And that, as we all know, means you’re ALREADY dehydrated and your body is already feeling the stress.

Sleep, as in making regular sleep – and bed times – part of your routine rather than relying on having a lay in at the weekend to try and fill the gap. It doesn’t by the way (!).

Exercise, being active during the day AND finding one you actually enjoy, so you’ll easily incorporate it into your day.

Taking regular time off to recharge your batteries and take a break from your day to day routine.

Along with all the small lifestyle choices you make every day. Positive and less so. And you already know what they are, however hard you may try to turn a blind eye to them (!).

While we’re on the subject, here’s a seasonal one you may not have thought of.

When did you last have a proper holiday? Waiting until you’re completely exhausted means you’ve left it too late. So, if you haven’t already booked some time off for this summer, don’t waste any more time before you do (!).

A stitch in time really does save nine.

Proactive beats reactive every time.

As always, the choice is yours.
